My Wedding: Invitations

This post is part of a series about our DIY Kentucky Vineyard wedding. It was such a labor of love and there is so much to tell, so I’ll be splitting it up into categories. I hope you’ll find some inspiration and entertainment from what we did for our wedding, along with some ideas for your own day! You can read about the music herethe venue herethe decorations herethe dress here,my favorite moments here, the wedding party attire here or exchanging gifts here!

I haven't done a wedding post in a while, but I've been working on designing a friend's wedding invitations, and I guess it just has me in the mood.

Our invitations and all other printed products were definitely some of the most exciting for us. I mean, we're writers/designers, after all. Paper is kind of our thing. The invitations and programs were very important to us. We wanted them to be unique and beautiful, classic and "us." And of course, they needed to reflect the feel for our wedding day, which I think they did.

Kyle and I worked together on our invitations, but he did all of the actual designing. We worked with a printer in Knoxville, Tennessee, which is where we were living at the time, and they helped us out so much. If you can afford it, I highly recommend working with a company that has letterpress. They make the invitations so much more special and interesting.

One of the biggest pains of our invitations was the stamps. We decided we wanted vintage stamps, which was awesome, but became tedious when we were actually preparing to mail out the invitations. Because stamp prices are always changing, we had to do a lot of adding to get the correct postage amount. Remember when I said we were designers? Yeah, we don't really like math too much. But in the end, they were all beautiful, and I think they were a delight to receive in the mail. At least I like to think so. Here is a photo of what they looked like when we mailed them (Hey, Jodi, that's your pic!).

For the programs, we printed these ourselves, and we got some help from family members (a distinct theme of everything we tried to do for this crazy wedding) to sew the covers. We used a chambray-like fabric and red thread for the little booklets.

I still love these invitations. They take me back to that day, and help me remember how insane/inspired we were when we were planning it. It was such an exciting, wild time for us. We were living in Tennessee and planning a wedding in Kentucky with our families from West Virginia. It was nuts. But magnificent.

What's the best invitation you've ever received? Did it make you want to attend the event even more? Let me know in the comments!
