My Wedding: Favorite Moments

This post is part of a series about our DIY Kentucky Vineyard wedding. It was such a labor of love and there is so much to tell, so I’ll be splitting it up into categories. I hope you’ll find some inspiration and entertainment from what we did for our wedding, along with some ideas for your own day! You can read about the music herethe venue herethe decorations herethe dress here, or the hair and makeup here! The world never spins faster than when you're getting married. I think scientists should study it. Even though I was awake for over 20 hours that day, it seemed like only minutes went by between my getting out of bed in the morning and going to sleep that night. So it's a miracle that I can even remember anything at all, really.

Some memories are weirdly vivid. I remember the actual sound of laughter with my sister and girlfriends over breakfast at my parents' house before we all started getting ready. I remember drinking mimosas out of a plastic cup while I curled my hair and how the room smelled like a mixture of hairspray and champagne. I remember putting on my dress and my mother buttoning the back. I remember our family members singing together in the ceremony and my sister refusing to look at me so she wouldn't cry. I remember a lot of things I knew would happen, things that were planned, but some of my favorite moments of my wedding day were not planned at all.

Our nephew, Brady, was very serious about his ring-bearing duties. It was all he talked about for weeks leading up to the wedding day. He even tried to show our flower girl how to hold her basket of flower petals, so when she actually walked down the aisle, she didn't scatter a single petal because I think she was too freaked out by Brady's seriousness of the job, plus the 300 people looking at her and her gold TOMS.

When I was trying to choose a song for Kyle and I to dance to at the reception, I was having the hardest time finding something that felt right. We have so many "our songs," but none of them were really for a first dance. And honestly, I didn't really care about picking a song that had some sort of sentimental value to it, I just wanted the perfect beat and lyrics. Then I was cooking and "Dream a Little Dream of Me" came on my playlist. And I got chills and a rush of snapshots of times with Kyle over the years went through my mind. This was it. We had listened to it a lot in the early days of dating, and it was such a song of love and nostalgia for me that I knew it was perfect. Dancing with Kyle for the first time as husband and wife was obviously wonderful, but having that moment of epiphany in the kitchen over that song is what I remember alongside the memories of dancing with him in that barn.

The smell of Chanel No. 5 will forever take me back to my wedding day and honeymoon. If I just think of the smell of that perfume, I am instantly there.

Another song-related memory that I can see perfectly in my mind was when I was telling my siblings what song I had chosen to walk down the aisle to, a song that I wanted to keep a secret from everyone as a surprise (which didn't happen), because it was so perfect for me. We were sitting at my mom's kitchen table, just the three of us, talking wedding stuff, and I typed in "over the rainbow violin version" into YouTube and

came up. We listened to it and in typical emotional Queen sibling fashion, started crying. All of us. I watched The Wizard of Oz constantly as a kid

, so this song and I have a strong connection. My siblings knew that, and after the cat was out of the bag and everyone knew that was my song, everyone agreed that it was perfect. I will always remember walking with my dad down the aisle to that song, but I will also forever see my siblings faces in my head when I think of that moment. They were the ones I chose to tell first because they get me.

One of the best moments of that day was totally random. The entire wedding party was lined up behind part of the vineyard waiting to walk to the ceremony, and Kyle's brother, Caleb, the Best Man, started picking grapes from the vine and eating them. He said they were delicious, so we started eating them. There I was, ready to go, all the guests seated and waiting for us, and I was eating grapes right off the vine. I'm not sure why I loved that moment so much, but it's one of the things that immediately comes to mind when I think of that day.

The moment that Kyle and I saw each other was perfect, laid back, and full of laughter. No tears allowed. I remember he brought me a bouquet of flowers, but we giggled because I already had a bouquet, so I handed off my "official" one for the ones he brought. I remember the texture of his suit under my hands. I remember the brightness of the sun out in the vineyard, the squeeze of his hug and the look on his face, but more than anything, I remember that feeling. I felt every emotion at once. I felt everything we'd experienced together, every vacation we'd been on, every song we'd sung, every date we'd had, every joke and every kiss and every understanding, all of which brought us to that moment.

Because the ceremony was on top of a hill, we needed some sort of transportation. Enter the golf carts and pick-up trucks. The girls hitched rides up the hill, and at one point had to help Sarina into the back of a truck. She grew up in Queens, New York, so she wasn't really familiar with how one is to do that in a dress. So funny. Of course, there are so many memories of that day, so many more that they would never all fit into a post, but for some reason these stand out in my mind a lot. We've been married over 7 months now, and it still feels like we just got married last weekend. I hope these memories are always this vivid, and I hope your day brings some unexpected favorite moments, too.
