Favorite Movies

Like many others, my relationship with my husband started at the movies. I was 16 and he took me to see a special showing of The Wizard of Oz, one of my all time favorites. For his birthday that same year, I made him this weird collage of old Hollywood movie stars. Since then, we've seen hundreds of movies together in different theaters all over the place, and we've watched hundreds more at home. It's our thing. So, in honor of that, here are my top 10 favorite movies. These are the ones that I can quote most of the lines and watch them over and over and never get bored. Some of these have always been favorites, and some were introduced to me from Kyle's extensive collection. Nonetheless, they are all fantastic.

The Reader This is the movie that I saw four times in the theater, twice by myself, and I was driving everyone crazy from talking about it so much. It's not about what you think it's about in the beginning. It ends up being about so much more. It broke my heart into a million pieces, and I fell in love with Kate Winslet all over again.

The Aviator This was one of the movies Kyle made me watch but I didn't think I would like it. Wrong. I am now and forever obsessed with the story of Howard Hughes.

His Girl Friday This is my favorite journalist movie. It's witty and hilarious and makes me reminisce about my college newspaper days.

Steel Magnolias I remember watching this with my mom when I was very young, but I didn't fully appreciate the film until later. This is one that I can quote from top to bottom, and I cry every time. The southern accents, the crazy wedding planning, the hilarious dialogue — all of it reminds me so much of my own family.

Sleepless in Seattle This is the movie I like to watch when I'm sad or in a weird mood. Kyle knows this. Sometimes he'll just put it on because he knows I need it.

Now & Then My parents let me watch this when I was a kid. I distinctly remember them telling me one summer day that I should watch it, because it'd be a good movie for me then. I had no idea what they meant, but now I do. It's a wonderful girls' coming-of-age story, and of course, I could relate. I still love it to this day. Of course, I resonated the most with Roberta. Big boobs, doesn't want them, tapes them down. Just go watch it.

Love, Actually The. Best. I watch this so much during the holiday season. The worst part of this whole movie? The Joni Mitchell CD. If you've seen this movie, you know what I mean. Heartbreaking.

The Wizard of Oz I watched this VHS tape so much when I was growing up that it started to warp and wouldn't play just right. Naturally, I can relate to Dorothy. There's no place like home.

Gone With The Wind Scarlett freaking O'Hara. She drives you nuts but you still admire her. I wrote a paper on Margaret Mitchell when I was in high school, which is what first spurred my interest in Gone With The Wind. I watched the movie as "research" and fell in love right away, even if it is four hours long.

The Seven Year Itch It's hard to choose a favorite Marilyn Monroe movie, but I think this one has to be it for me. Not only does she have that iconic blowing white dress moment in this film, but the movie also cracks me up. I don't actually LOL a lot in movies, but with this one, I always do.
